ANOTHER MODEL SAVED

(#121in a series where Frank finds a beater of a model and restores it to health - Ed)

Last month I obtained a very old Art-Tech RC Hobby MIG15 in need of TLC.The 64mm EDF had the 30amp ESC hanging down inside the fuselage behind the  exit from the fan, keeping it cool but obstructing about 40% of the  thrust area. I ran it up and at full throttle it was consuming 29amps,  so I have used a new 40amp unit. Extracting the old ESC meant a lot of  surgery removing the whole top of the fuselage. I have fitted the new ESC in the top of the fuselage in front of the EDF with a non scale duct so air can circulate all round it.

The foam horizontal tail stabiliser was damaged and so were the elevators  so I made a replacement from hard balsa covered with thin fibreglass and solarfilm.

The elevator servo was in the nose  with long thin cables that were seized, so I fitted a servo in the  fuselage in front of the tail with short control wires. When it has  proved it works OK I will fit a non scale shroud to tidy it up.

I covered the underside with sections from plastic bottles to protect on landing and drilled a few "cheat holes" in the fuselage to improve air inflow.

The missiles were 3D printed and re-sized to suit from free designs on Thingiverse. They also act as sacrificial protectors for the aileron servos.

Paint matched from B & Q sample pots for £3.50.

I am hoping it will fly on a 3s battery as they recommend, as I think the motor won't take a 4s.
