Hello fellow members.
During April five members, myself included, attended Sunrise Senior Living in Southbourne and gave an hour’s talk on our brief history and what we do these days. A small quad & a helicopter were flown briefly to demonstrate their agility. We were well received and the club gained £35 for our funds.
Strawberry Field suffered disastrously over the winter, mainly because cows we allowed on the field where we fly.
A team of 14 members came along and assisted with laying 1 3/4 tons of top soil which we seeded. A committee member acquired a Whacker Plate machine (F.O.C.) which we used to level part of the hump and pound the soil down. It has been seeded on three occasions as after seeding we had nights of heavy rain which moved the seed (not where we wanted it to be).
On a separate occasion five of us moved around 3 ton of cow excrement which was hampering egress from the barn for our mower.
I received £50 from the field owner towards the costs involved with purchasing the top soil.
Our mower decided it had had enough of us. The bottom plate was VERY rusty. The two rotary cutters were jammed solid. Alex Bush dismantled the mower parts and took it/them to Silver Street Garden Machinery who freed the cutters F.O.C. for us. I purchased some hammerite paint and some other small tools. Alex set to work and completely refurbished the whole bottom assembly. Jon Couldridge, Alex & myself then spent a whole morning resembling the mower. Alex had sharpened the two cutter blades.
I am arranging to hire a 1.6 ton twin vibrating ride on roller to attempt to flatten the flying strip. By the time you read this it should be all done.
Saturday 23rd July we are holding a Fun Day of flying for ALL to take part. There will also be a BBQ on site with sausages & burgers supplied F.O.C. The owner has said this will be a FREE to fly day so a totally free day to all those who attend. It will be open to your better halves to attend, too.
27th August will be a Scale flying day at Strawberry Field. If bad weather it will be on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August.
Many questions have been asked about the revised BMFA tests. At our July Club Night Manny Williamson and one other chap will travel down from Leicester and explain what is required. As club examiner I too need to know!
Slope soaring has been very popular this spring with the members, as has flying from water.
My final comment is a BIG thank you to Hurst View caravan park for allowing us use of their field while SF was out of commission. A BIG thank you to Jon Goddard to arranging Hurst View.
