The Magic of flying by Brian Wiseman

I have not done much flying this year, I have only got to Beaulieu once so far. The weather has been windy as we all know and my wife has been ill, so I have had more domestic duties. I did manage to get a few flights in the Sports Field. I have been unwell and at my age I need to feel fit and well to fly planes.  I can feel that my reflexes are getting a little slower and can see the end of my flying career looming. I have reached the age of 85and have had a good innings.

It has got me thinking about this hobby and its magic. To me when we put a plane on the runway and get it moving then take it into the air it is a magical moment. In the anxiety of getting airborne we sometime miss that.  The equipment is now so good that we can make a plane do any stunts which are within our ability.  They can roll, loop zoom. When the plane is flying well in a bright blue sky we get so involved in flying that we forget we are doing what our grandfathers could not imagine, and when we old men were children could not have thought possible. We are so fortunate.  It is so easy to lose sight of the wonder of what we do even for us moderate and unskilful pilots.
