Rosebowl Annual Thermal Glider Contest.

CD Terry Antell

Hosted by Wessex Soaring Association.

Sunday 14th June 2015 was the best thermal soaring day for a few weeks. Not booming with strong thermals during the first round of three. Sink was always lurking close by as can been seen by Martin’s first round score of 211. Having said that his first score in round one was 535 but he chose to fly again.  It was this second score that had to count as the first one is then deleted.

Two contestants flew twice in the first round. Two in the second round & one in the third.

The contest is still run on an old fashioned format so all don’t launch together in the same parcel of air. Each person makes the decision when to launch, taking account of birds, other models already flying and clouds, etc.  Although each round is one hour it’s surprising how quick the pilot has to get going as a second flight may be needed, hence only 45 minutes is really available to get two flights with landing spots.

The winner will have their name & club engraved on the Rosebowl, plus they won a bottle of wine on the day. The runner-up also bagged a bottle of wine.

Although nine entered there were actually eleven people at the meet. So, thanks to a new Christchurch member, David Shipton who practiced with his chuckie model and helped timing. Also Roger Dornom, another Christchurch member, who did lots of timing and had a non-competitive fly with his Easy Glider Pro elec.

Thanks to Martin Burr for organising the WSA site and tapes etc.

Those who have down well: Martin Burr has really come into his own spotting and using thermal activity AND mastering the FR Sky Tx/Rx.

Geoff Collins with his own design R/E models. He is a real challenger with high scores and Ian Wettstein flying his Shaddow, also a strong challenger at any thermal comp.

Those to watch in coming years: Jon Couldridge in his first comp (2015) will be one to watch as he can make a Radian compete with open model successfully.

Finally.  It was great to see Nigel Bennett having a go although he was wearing a leg restraint after his tendon injury. Well done for coming along and having a fly.
