Summer Thermal Series
With just one month to go in this contest, we are left with a
very tight situation. Brian Brockway (Veron Vortex) and Alan Parker
(Algebra) have been out each month and, with one exception have
been recording maximum times. The exception was in June when Alan
only managed 6m 28s, so dropping 32s to Brian.
The maximum in September is 10 minutes so, can Brian get another max and so be the clear winner or can Alan beat him by more than 32 seconds? Or could there be a tie and a fly-off? Third place is still open to a number of flyers, so don't miss the action at Stanpit every Friday night.
Electric Evening, Friday 12th July
Unfortunately this year's event had to be held at Stanpit on account
of the unwelcome guests at Kings Park. This no doubt was responsible
for the reduced number of flyers. Also the midges and long grass
at Stanpit did not help but otherwise it was a lovely calm and
warm evening.
The flying however was very interesting with Neil Longman being the chief test pilot. His newish Easy Street was fast and aerobatic. Clive Spencer brought his Ohm Maiden down safely after twenty minutes and prepared his Airacobra for Neil to put in some nice scale-like flying. The long grass acted like an arrester hook with the model safely ejecting the battery pack - all part of the design!
Andy 'Depron' Tubbs got some flying time with his Twinstar, and he was certainly not short of advice on what to do. However, it fell to Neil to have the confidence to take on Andy's B2 stealth model. This is a small ARTF foam model with two tiny electric motors set in the wings. There is an unbelievable amount of wash in on the wings so we were not surprised when Neil announced after the first attempt at flight that it was 'not really listening to me'. After some adjustments by Andy a second attempt was made with only a slight improvement. Once again, more adjustments were made and this time with success. Neil seemed to have got it listening to him and it flew a number of circuits, all under control. He did say that it was the most unstable thing he had ever flown. Nobody else offered to take the transmitter! Full marks to Andy for tackling this unusual model, but definitely not one for beginners!
Altogether a most entertaining evening - and even the midges
were not too bad!
