BMFA Scale Power Fun Fly
By Christopher Morris (plus secretarial support)

"I DID IT!.. I BEAT HIM... YEAHhhhh!!!!!"
After years of constant and persistent training it finally paid off. I came 6th in the competition but unfortunately 'Big Man Boss Man' didn't do so well (in fact last was his final position). I have to admit I was becoming a little worried about how I was going to get home!

Perhaps I should explain. We had been invited to Winchester Flying Club's BMFA Scale fun fly. I took my World War 1 monoplane, the Magnatilla. Big Man Boss Man took his 1/4 scale Piper Pawnee and 1/6 scale Fokker DR1, allegedly Baron Von Richtoffen's famous Red Baron airframe. Checking the history books reveals that this is not the case - but that's another story.

Big Man Boss Man's day did not start well. A phone call to Mum found the Pawnee wing dowels in the caravan. Not a good place when the caravan is in Dorset and we are in Hampshire.

The weather forecast had not been promising but after cup of tea number two, we found the weather improving. The morning mist cleared but we had to cope with a crosswind. A good flying order had me flying in sunshine. I completed the set schedule of take off, circuit, figure of eight and other requirements which I have since forgotten. I finished with an almost perfect landing - I was gob smacked. Flying at its best!

Big Man Boss Man on the other hand, found the cornfield when the engine quit on take off - Oops!!

I could embarrass him further but I won't, as there is my 'B' BMFA Certificate at stake. However I had a "stonking" day and maybe next year might see me entering the BMFA Nationals and maybe once again competing with Big Man Boss Man. I must be mad!!!
