Writing this at 4.30pm in the dark, the Winter modelling season is undeniably upon us. For all but the hardiest slopers (and we have quite a few of them!) this means that outdoor flying opportunities become somewhat less frequent. Some of us will retreat to the building board and some will research their next scale project, or just curl up with a book and look forward to the coming of Spring.
Nowadays though, we have other ways of indulging our interests in inclement weather. Our indoor flying sessions are once again in full swing and providing plenty of entertainment for flyers and spectators alike. Another way of keeping your thumbs in trim is with one of the many flight simulators available. These are now so good that you can really advance your flying skills without getting out of your chair. If though you are determined to give your thumbs a rest, then there are any number of internet sites through which to search for inspiration and education.
Our own web site has been due for an overhaul for some time now, and one of the services which we were keen to introduce is online viewing of the newsletter (in full colour of course). This is now complete and I have included details of what you can expect to find there. Chairman Clive has already remarked on the high standard of entries to the Construction and Finish competition and I have squeezed in as many photos as possible of this and also of the prize giving which took place at the AGM.
Gordon Coy has provided a report on a day out with the Wincanton Falcons club. Most of us are familiar with the bigger model shows but more and more local clubs are holding these open days and they are a great opportunity to fly at a few different sites and chat to fellow modellers.
Finally, we have no fewer that four model reviews in this issue. The Construction & Finish comp was, I believe unique in that two examples of the same model took the top two places. We have reviews of both models, from Clive Spencer and Ken Spokes. Somewhat smaller, but equally impressive, we have Mike Roach's own designed Spitfire. This has flown successfully outdoors and Mike intends to try it inside. Definitely for indoors only is my Supermarine Walrus. I have to admit that there is a certain satisfaction in seeing this unlikely looking model cruising gently around in the old Flying Boat Hangar at Calshot. Whatever you do, have a great Christmas - and if you don't get what you want, there is always the Bring & Buy sale in March to look forward to!
