Ever worried about world domination?
The Romans tried it.
The Germans tried it.
Guess what? I believe that the Flying Morrises are now up to
it!
'What's she twittering on about?' I hear you say. Well, back at the beginning of August (which I am sure you all remember because of the extremely acceptable weather) the Flying Morrises returned to the scene of a previous triumph, the Winchester Club's BMFA Scale day.
If you're not aware, the Flying Morrises are father and son Steve and Christopher Morris. Christopher has now had his "B" wings for a year and has on a few occasions shown his father up. One such case was last year at the Winchester Club Scale day when he was given a special trophy for his Magnatilla and being the only junior to enter and participate in the event. (In the BMFA News his age was quoted as 12, but he was actually 14, which he would like pointed out.) Steve unfortunately came away with nothing as he had left half his aeroplane at home!
This year they meant business!
Not only was the sun shining down on them (a slight understatement, with temperatures soaring at around 35°C) but they remembered to take everything as well!
Steve was flying the Pawnee, (he
remembered the wing joiners this time) and Christopher was flying
his Giles 202 aerobatic machine, (which is pulled through the
sky by a 120 Saito).
Now at the top of this piece I mentioned world domination and you may ask yourself what it has to do with the Flying Morrises. Well, these two have been to quite a few shows and a few fly-ins this year and are getting a name for themselves. Unfortunately, Steve is usually only recognised when the red-haired Christopher is spotted! It might not be world domination these two are after, but the boxing gloves are now on with Christopher trying to outwit and outfly his father.
On this occasion Christopher flew a blinding set schedule with
aerobatic options and came 1st in flying and scooped a 3rd in
the static judging. Steve on the other hand, although he displayed
his smoke system, came 3rd in flying but pipped Christopher and
received 1st in static. (Do you see a pattern emerging?)
Needless to say both came home full of the joys, with Steve saying
that they let someone else have second as a courtesy, but the
boy admits to having to let his father win something as at the
moment "Dad is still the main sponsor of son's hobby and
has to be kept sweet!" (How does that saying go 'Out of
the mouths of babes.....')
Well that's what happened at the Winchester Club. They have since also flown at the Royal Victoria Country Park, Southampton. I have been told something about trees and dogs, but you had to be there. Christopher is now learning the art of aerotowing and I am sure before long will be putting in a request for a 'biggy' to compete with Dad. The last event on the agenda this year is the Bovington Model Expo 2003 so maybe by the time this is published you will have seen them there. Steve was the one hanging around the young lad with red hair.
