Sloping Off - June 2002

Editorial
by Trevor Hewson

Welcome to the midsummer edition of Sloping Off. I hope that by the time you read this, the weather will have got its act together and you won't have to read the opening sentence with the same sense of irony with which I wrote it. The wet and windy end to May has though provided a good opportunity to get this newsletter together on time and I am delighted to report that we have a good variety of contributions and contributors to help you to while away any further wet spells which may be in store for us.

Our main review is provided by Cyril Heath who reports on his large scale Piper Cub. This is an electric conversion of an i.c. ARTF model, so should be of interest to quite a few of you. As our indoor flying season draws to a close, I conclude the report on my SE5a which is now fully painted and populated. This has been a useful and instructive exercise, and I am expecting several more models in the 'Depron scale' category to appear when we resume indoor flying in September.

Mike Roach though has been dabbling with another variety of perforated plastic and he introduces us to the joys of modelling in pink foam. I am also indebted to Mike for this issue's snippet of Web Wisdom. If anyone builds this one, I really want to hear about it!

The Sandown model show was back to its best this year and I have included a couple of pictures of our particular raiding party. This may also serve as an appetiser for some model reviews which you may or may not read about in future issues. At least you know whose arm to twist.

The slopers seem to have been enjoying themselves this year, after last year's foot and mouth problems. To prove the point, Phil Howard sent me a photo of some of the regulars, just to show you what a happy bunch they are. Ian Parrett, meanwhile, has been rummaging through some rather older photographs, and has come up with a few pictures to stir the memories of our more mature members.

We have a goodly collection of members' adverts, reports from the Comp Sec. and Treasurer as well as Chairman Clive's regular column and the usual details of club contacts and activities. That's about it for this time - except of course for that day at Howard's field, which I have been trying to forget about ............
