Sloping Off - June 2005

Competition News

The Carl Goldberg Gentle Lady, as flown by the winning Club man Nick Hughes in the Rose Bowl Comp. 78in span, easy to build and fly, yet holds its own against the competition.

Why not build and fly one in the Thermal series?

Rose Bowl Annual Thermal Competition - 24th April 2005

The competition was held at Chalbury by kind permission of the Wessex Soaring Association. Not only did WSA provide the flying field by they laid on some good weather and all the launching equipment. Of the five C&DMFC members who took part, only Brian Brockway had previous winch experience. Nevertheless all our models were successfully launched thanks to some good tutoring by WSA members.

The format of the competition is for each flyer to try and fly the target time of 10 minutes then land within a 12.5 metre radius graduated spot. Bonus seconds are awarded for the spot landing - 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25. Three fairly leisurely rounds were flown, finishing just after 2pm.

The overall winner was Nigel Bennett, flying a Starlight, a clear 59 seconds ahead of second place Glyn Fonteneau with his flying wing. Dave Camp was third, flying a Solution. Our best flyer on the day was Nic Hughes, who was actually third overall at the end of round two with his Gentle Lady but had a poor final round.

The models were a bit of mixed bag, ranging from high tech machines to Gentle Lady type. The flying wing was flown very well and in one of the rounds circled across the field at a very low height, clocking up a good time.

Apart from our members mostly not having used a winch before, for some of them this was their first competition and I don’t feel any of them were put off thermal flying.

Mrs. Gardener, WSA Chairman (or should it be Chairlady / Chairperson?) received the Rose  Bowl on behalf of Nigel Bennett and so ended a good day’s flying with all the models going home in one piece.

Summer Thermal Series

Glider: This has got off to a good start, despite two of the four Fridays being unflyable in May:

Jim Telford                          7min (max)

Brian Brockway                  6m 58s

Clive Spencer                     5m 22s

Derek Longman                  4m 45s

Martin  Burr                        3m 59s

The June target time is 8 minutes.

Electric: So far we have only one flyer, Terry Antell, who has recorded 4m 58s against the target of 5 minutes with a fairly ordinary model - but with a brushless motor giving him about one and a half times bungee launch height on a 30 second motor run!

If possible I will try to arrange a day of fun flying in the New Milton area on Monday 29th August, so please watch the website for further details.
