Sloping Off - March 2006

Thanks to all contributors for making this a bumper issue.  Please keep contributions coming in: the closing date for the next magazine is 1 June.  Photos, articles, stuff from the Press, anything with a modelling flavour!

Two contributors have asked for advice on electric terminology and its application to the hobby.  There’s an opportunity for someone to write clearly and intelligibly about electric power.  I remember Trevor giving a very good talk to us at the Village Hall about 3 or 4 years ago which made it all seem simple enough.  Perhaps we can persuade him to put pen to paper?

The inability to understand the language of electric power is present in electric flyers, not just IC pilots.  This is such a common failing that it must be to do with the abstract nature of electricity itself.  I would think that the great majority of drivers could give you a reasonable explanation of how a petrol or diesel engine works because this is a practical subject that can be very easily illustrated by actual examples.  Explanations of electricity always seem to depend on analogies with water flow and pressure: perhaps these are not clear or memorable enough - or are we just luddites who were left behind as the shockwave of progress passed over our heads?

This and other analogies from..... MR
