Sloping Off - March 2006

Expertise Please
by Terry Sullivan

Having just replaced my ageing Formosa with a new one, equipped with a small outrunner and Lipo's, I have been a bit bamboozled by the terminology used to describe the motors and batteries. Possibly this was explained by John Emms in the talk that I missed, but it occurred to me that an article on the way batteries are described ( what is a 3S1P battery?) and motors are described would be helpful to me and many others. How do you find out the wattage of your motor? What does it mean when a battery says 10C normal, 12C burst? I assume that this means you can pull an amperage 12 times the mah of your battery for a few seconds, i.e. 12 amps on a 1000mah pack, but assumptions can be dangerous when you could turn your model into a fireball!

If any of you guys understand these things, perhaps one of you could write an article for Sloping Off? If not, do we know of a member who would write it up? And can I have an advance copy please!

(Note also the similar plea in Alan Bradshaw's article in this issue - Ed)
