We were blessed with a splendid day at SF for our annual C&F competition, judged this year by Peter Chaldecott, assisted by Jon Couldridge. Peter was last year’s unlucky winner (the rules dictate that the winner judges the following year’s comp). There was a decent turnout of models and spectators for this first time event - it’s normally held indoors because it is only judging the build and the finish, not the flying.
Here’s the briefing, Peter the young chap 5th from the left. The winner’s shield is on the table front right, below the Chairman. The entries were:
Martin Burr’s Andreas electric glider, kit built, weighs about 500g and flies “very nicely”
Mike Edwards own design DLG or mini Hi-Start, traditional construction, weighs 330g
Clive Spencer’s OD Sukhoi 26, foam wings, balsa and foam fuselage.
Alex Bush built this Colomban Luciole from a Peter Miller plan in RCME. Superb!
Trevor Hewson’s Slingsby T13 Petrel from the Chris Williams plan, aero-towed
Tim Calvert’s Li’l Cub, another Peter Miller RCME plan, loads of 3D printing involved
Mike Roach’s 120” span Avro Lincoln, based on Pettigrew’s Lancaster, trad build, balsa, ply and a bit of foam.
Mike’s 48” span depron Supermarine Seafire 47
And his all-balsa DH Sea Vixen, pusher prop, 48” span
The winner was Mike’s Lincoln, with the People’s Choice, voting on the day, being Trevor’s Petrel. The Lincoln flew on the day, but a hung retract caused a wheel-up landing (a first time for everything).
Other models to fly were John’s Corsair, flown by Trevor to great appreciation from the owner
David’s exquisite little powered glider
and Alex’s Colomban Luciole (but see also “Tailpiece”)
