Build, Cover & Fly, Construct the RCM&E Trainer
by Tim Calvert
Fancy a winter project?
With the success of the Training Pre Meetings and regular winter weekday Club meetings at ‘The Walkford’, if there is sufficient interest from members we plan to run a support program to Build, Cover & Fly, construct a model.
The proposal is to adopt the plane, which is a forthcoming Free Plan, together with support build articles (starting in the June issue, available now) that will be published in RCM&E Magazine. The free plan will be available in the edition published at the beginning of September, just in time for the Winter Season.
The Plane is a 50 inch Span trainer style plane of traditional Balsa construction, it will have options for 3 Channel (Rudder, Elevator) or 4 Channel (Rudder Elevator, Aileron) with a semi symmetrical Aerobatic wing for those intermediate flyers, and for tricycle or tail wheel undercarriage options. Perfect for Strawberry Field and suitable for taking that BMFA ‘A’ test, as it meets the Undercarriage and 1kg weight rules
The plane should appeal to both beginners and intermediate flyers, and while the focus is on novice builders to foster more involvement in the construction side of this hobby, it’s also a fun winter project for those with building experience wishing to participate.
Construction has been kept simple to minimise complexity and keep the material (and cost) requirements to a minimum. RCM&E through their supporting suppliers will be providing in addition ‘Kits’ of CNC/Laser pre cut Wood packs, hardware packs and electrics for those individuals who do not wish to source the components directly themselves.
I have been working with the RCM&E columnist Nigel Hawes the planes designer on a set of decals for the plane that will be the Cover feature in a future RCM&E.
The proposals will be introduced and discussed more fully at the July Club meeting, when I should be in a position to show in more detail the proposed design and discuss the format of the support tutorials planned for the winter season.
