TEN FOOT OF AVRO LINCOLN (OR “WHAT WAS I THINKING OF!”)

a5723630-99-2000_01200007

A few years ago I built a 60" span Avro Lincoln from depron, and very  good it looked too. The white scheme with black under-surfaces was easy  to paint and (I think) very attractive. Steve 85 on RC Groups was making his 48" span Lancaster at the time and generously sent me a cockpit canopy to  complete the model. I got all the details I needed from the November  2008 edition of Aeroplane magazine.

The Lincoln was designed by Roy Chadwick and his team in response to the Air Staff's requirement for a heavy bomber with longer range than the  existing ones, to prepare for the war in the Far East. The Lancaster,  with its huge bomb bay, was the obvious choice for development and only a few changes were necessary: longer wing tips with only 2 degrees dihedral, a fuselage extension behind the wing, a large greenhouse on  the nose, heavier armament and of course the annular radiators for the  Merlin engines. There is an utterly fascinating analysis of the  Lancaster and its developments
here which I strongly recommend to anyone with the slightest interest in the subject.

Ivan's Lancaster plan is for 100" span at 1/12th scale, so the Lincoln  fits neatly into 120" and I had all the scale sections and component  shapes from the depron version and they just needed doubling in size *rolls eyes. Progress so far...
