christchurch and district model flying club

editorial

Many thanks to all the contributors for making this another full issue.  Please would members who have not put pen to paper or camera to aircraft have a go next year? There’s a page near the end of the issue for you to practice on!

Brian Wiseman writes a reflective and rather moving tribute to Air Shows at page 18 and raises an interesting issue at the end of his article: apropos of model jets flying at 200 mph 3' off the ground he says - In my youth none of this was possible nor was it imagined, we are certainly very lucky. I wonder what it will be like when my great Grandchildren are old men? Will there be any historic aircraft flying in 60 years time? Will M Bleriot’s construction rumble slowly into the sky at Old Warden? Or will entropy and health and safety regulations have succeeded in grounding all our old aircraft?

Personally I doubt it. There will always be enthusiasts with dreams: just look at the steam engine industry.  Science may lend a hand: there are rumours of “whole mass copying”. And 60 years is not all that long: after all, I am about that age and I still feel quite young on a good day.  Of course, we may end up creating simulations so good that they can’t be differentiated from reality. Then you could fly your Spitfire PR MkVIII on a mission over northern France and be unable to tell whether the flak bursting off to starboard was aimed at you or not.

Is that what it will be like when Brian’s grandchildren are old men?
