The recent Club auction of the contents of David Enticott’s aeromodelling room reminded me of the sheer volume of detritus we accumulate as we pass through life. Old vinyl records, too full of sentimental value to be thrown away, yet never to be listened to again; hundreds of paperbacks that we might read “one day”; shelves of magazines with free plans that we will never dream of building; attics full of discarded models that just perhaps might be restored to flying condition. When I pass on, you guys can have all my modelling gear (and I don’t just mean the lippy and the hairspray) but I’m afraid it will not be in such good condition as David’s was. His last gift to me was a tube of waterproof grease for use on dry-suit zips and press-studs, so it gets used once a month to keep the Catalina’s control system free moving. All his models seemed to be in the same state - ready to fly with just a touch of TLC.
It was a good evening, and lots of members were there. I don’t think this is ghoulish, it just shows a healthy interest in the contents of someone’s spare room, and the chance of picking up a bargain as a bonus. I didn’t buy anything (see above for the reason) but I hope those of you who did are getting the same pleasure from it as David did.
But back to detritus. I have aquired family planning permission to convert our redundant garage (it’s too narrow for the car, which has stood outside for years with no ill effects) into a grand modelling room, as long as I don’t mind sharing with a fridge, freezer, bicycle and other assorted bits and pieces. It seems ideal to me, as long as it can be made reasonably warm. No modelling for a while though, I suppose!
