Spotters advert?

“Hey Mike, what’s this plane” said my wife one Saturday afternoon, as she handed me a colour supplement.

This advert for insurance appeared a few weeks ago “If you don’t trust the pilot, don’t fly" is the message. Quite what that has to do with home and business insurance I’m not sure, but I was interested in the aircraft, which gave a loose and rather clunky link from the slogan to the advertisers. What sort of plane was it? In the original (and you can see this on the website of course) it is bright red. Does that help? I thought not.

It is obviously a Sopwith and equally obviously it might be a Camel...but there isn’t any dihedral on the bottom wing and it’s a two-seater! It’s beautifully and correctly rigged: a pro job.

After a quick dash to my books, I thought I had placed it. The lack of dihedral, the red colour and the uncovered wheels are red herrings: it’s a model of a 2-seater Camel. I suspect it was some sort of promotional gimmick and as far as  know there was never a red one, but it did provide a few minutes of unexpected interest in the Daily Telegraph.

Now I must wash my mouth out..
