THE BIMBO WEEKEND 2014.

You may remember that this stands for British Ivan Model Builders Organisation...the “O” gets forgotten sometimes but the rest is accurate enough. We started meeting in 2009 and since 2011 have flown at SF and Longham. This year the weather was too rough to fly on the Friday or the Saturday, but Sunday was near-perfect at the reservoir. Monday was rather bumpy at SF, with the wind curling over the firs. What would it take to have them cut down, I wonder?

SUNDAY 31 AUGUST AT LONGHAM RESERVOIR

Nick Chudleigh’s unusual Beriev 103, an amphibious civilian type. It has no “seaplane” hull, just takes off from its wing under-surface. Just to show it’s not all flannel, the real thing is below.

Scott Wallis brought an elderly “£10 at a Club Auction” Twin Star with the floats off his Twin Otter.

Clive Spencer’s Grumman Albatross is a fine, stabe and easy flier that looks the Dog’s (sorry) the Bee’s in the air.

Nick’s other plane was a Pettigrew Shoestring with OD floats. Another Bee’s in the air.

Bob Corfield brought this very attractive Super Scooper, about 5’ span. He converted it from IC power and although it seemed a bit heavy (and needed a firm hand when taking off) it flew very well. He burned out an SC after the Maiden flight but I’m sure it will be back.

Guest flier Martin Hardy’s Pettigrew Twin Otter 600 in its Panama Airlines livery looked very pretty and performed well. He also flew it off the grass with a wheeld UC option.

MONDAY 1 SEPTEMBER AT STRAWBERRY FIELD

We fly the Canadian flag in honour of Ivan P and Hal Norrish, who travelled to the UK in 2011. The flag is signed by every BIMB and their partners.

First up was Nick Chud, taxiing out his own design DH Albatross, past my Ivann P Auster AOP 6and the ill-fated TA152 (see “Tailpiece”) The Albi is a very graceful flierand looks every inch the 1930s dreamliner.

Guests Martin Hardy and Scott Wallis brought very different models. Martin’s Twin Otter, back on its wheels, tackled the rather bumpy breeze well. Scott’s Hurricane, from a D-Rock short kit, just could not overcome battery problems (caused by being sourced from eBay!). The model design is a real “stick and tissue” job and keeps being reinforced as required.

Martin’s Mossie was a very different beast, built from the Ivan P plan with added sheeting for a more scale section. It flew really well and handled the breeze like the full size.

Finally, the Annual mugs were presented to Clive Spencer, Martin Hardy, Nick Chudleigh and Trevor Hewson.

You want one? Build an Ivan’s model and come and fly it next year!
