After the rafter-raising entry of last year it was perhaps predictable that there would be only a slack handful this time!
The new judging system, where models are assessed by the previous year’s winner, then separately voted on by all members present proved a success, with what was clearly the most expertly constructed and finished model being voted the winner by both systems.
Alex Bush’s “Hammerhead”, an unusual canard slope glider from a free plan won the “First Timers” award. It was superbly finished and decorated and a would have been a worthy winner overall had not Martyn presented:
His Hermes Major. I admit that my personal favourite in this era of free-flight model aircraft is the Bill Dean “Southerner”, kitted by Keil Kraft in the 50s and 60s, but the Hermes comes close for elegance. Martyn is a craftsman and when I saw his uncovered model a few months ago I realised that my only hope in the competition was sheer size!
Many congratulations to Martyn on his win...and his judging next year!
I think this is the largest model, by volume if not by span, to have been entered in the C&F. There’s a bout a ton of detail to be added, but my priority in May was to see if she flew...and that’s how it turned out.
So please, Club builders and fliers, have a go next year!
