 WESSEX ELECTRIC THERMAL COMPETITIONS

10.30am start. Briefing at 10.15 am. Two classes will run concurrently, for both Open class and Restricted Class gliders. Both classes will launch separately from the other.

General Rules (for both classes)

  • Frequency control. Peg on aerial system. Return peg to board when not flying. Bring spare frequencies.
  • Each pilot to fly 1 flight against each other in their Class.
  • Both (or more) competitors launch at the same time. Timing starts at launch. Last one down wins.
  • Motor run only at the launch of each flight. (Note: at any time motor mat be used for safety, STOP timing when the motor is switched on.)
  • A time keeper is required for each round to (a) collect the scorecard (b) record results (c) return the completed scorecard to the Scorekeeper.
  • No telemetry assistance allowed.
  • Pilots to be prepared to fly promptly with next available competitor(s), once the previous round is decided.
  • Pilots to compete in 75% of flights or scores discounted, any uncompleted flights to be a walkover.
  • Overall ties to be decided by unlimited fly-offs.
  • A prize will be awarded for each class winner. (There may be an entry fee at some events.)
  • Contest Directors’ decisions will be final.

Open Class Rules.   Contest Director Nigel Bennett.

       1.   Any spec of electric powered soaring glider, electric motor and power pack is eligible.

       2.   Height of powered climb will be limited, ideally with all models incorporating an altitude limiter. In the short term, those competitors not using altitude limiters are asked to ensure their models comply with the 200w/kg rule, either by adding weight if needed or by using a smaller diameter, or reduced pitch propeller.

        3.   Those competitors using limiters will be allowed a maximum powered climb of  200m, or 35 secs,  which ever is reached the sooner.

        4.   Those competitors not using limiters will have a maximum powered climb time of 30 secs.

        5.   Timing will start from launch and there is a flight maximum time of 10 minutes, finishing either when the model lands or when the motor is restarted to avoid an outlanding. Only one motor run allowed per timed flight.

        6.   Spot landing points will be awarded as long as the model lands less than 10mins and 10 secs after launch. . There will be two 5m long tapes also marked at 2m. 1/2 pt will be scored if the nose of the model is within the 5m radius, and 1 pt if within the 2m radius.

The competition will be flown as a Round Robin, where each pilot flies against every other pilot in turn. Points scored will be 4 for a win, 2 for a draw, and either 1/2 or 1 point for spot landing as described above. The loser gets no points other than spot landing points.  In the case of a draw (both with Max’s or both with identical times) the 4 points are shared, ie 2 each.

600RES Restricted Class.   Contest Director Chris Hague

  • Any  model. Maximum number of servos 3. (Rudder, elevator & optional top wing mounted barn door type, spoiler/air brake only.)
  • One direct drive standard ferrite 600(max.) motor to be used.  Maximum retail price of motor £10. (Multiplex 600 7.2v or Graupner 600 7.2v motor recommended.)
  • Maximum 7 cell Nicad or Nickel Metal Hydride pack only to be used, pack may be charged/changed between flights. (NiMH 2200 x 7 cells recommended.)
  • Wing to remain fixed both cordwise and spanwise (except for optional top wing mounted, barn door type, spoiler/air brake only.).
  • No limit to the number of eligible models to be used.
  • 45 second motor run, only at the beginning of the flight. (1 minute motor run for standard, unmodified, ARTF, plura fuselage types. e.g. Bluebird 100, Easy Pigeon etc.)
  • Score 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw. (If more than 2 flying against each other, score 4 points for each pilot defeated).
  • Max flight time 15 minutes. If both (or more) pilots draw or are still flying at 15 minutes then the points are shared equally.

2009 WESSEX TOMBOY COMPETITION RULES

The event will usually be run with 2x qualifying flights of 4 minutes minimum, with a fly-off to decide the overall placings.

  • Each competitor to show proof of BMFA Inurance.
  • Each competitor to supply a timekeeper and stopwatch. (Willing timekeepers often available! See the Contest Director if necessary.)
  • Hand launch allowed by either competitor or an assistant.
  • Fly-off to consist of a max of 8 pilots, if necessary heats and semi-finals of 8 max pilots to take place first.
  • For the Fly-off, 90 seconds will be allowed to start the engine followed by a 10 seconds warning to launch. Launching must then take place. Zero score if launching is late.
  • Landing to be in the designated area or zero score.
  • If more than one competition takes place overall positions will be calculated for each round as follows; Winner 10 points; 2nd 9; 3rd 8; 4th 7; 5th 6; 6th 5; 7th 4; 8th 3; all others in the fly-off achieving a score of 2 points. Entrants making a flight but not making the fly-off to receive 1 point.
  • Overall tie break to be highest placings.
  • Models not within the rules to be allowed to compete at the Contest Directors, discretion. The CD may request an examination of any competitors engine to check legality. Infringements will involve a time penalty. (e.g. Undersize wheels, 1 minute to be deducted from the fly-off time) You have been warned!!!!
  • Pilots who have registered a unique frequency with the Contest Directors’ will be given total priority on that frequency.
  • For various reasons (e.g. safety) these rules may need to be adjusted on the day by the Contest Director.

Helpful notes:

Purely to encourage and make it easier for new participants these rules differ slightly from those followed by the National Tomboy 3 and Tomboy Senior competitions therefore if you wish to enter the national competition please verify those rules and your model beforehand.

As there are often 16 or so competitors at the National events we at Wessex league intend to follow their frequency request system whereby competitors reserve their 35 MHz frequency for the year so that on the day of an event there are no clashes.  Please phone James Parry or email with your frequency. It will be on a first come first served basis. No 27 MHz permitted.

Partial Tomboy kits are available from the Old School Model Aeroplane Factory, Belair etc.

A variety of Mills engines are often available on eBay. At most Vintage meetings various engines, props and bits are often for sale. Please note only plain bearing engines are allowed.

Send your email address to James Parry in order to receive Wessex Tomboy information.
