MORE notes ON DIY MARKINGS

By mike roach

I thought you might be interested in a "new" method of putting "stand way off" markings onto a model.  I was thinking of flying the Catalina on Thursday (Stanpit, probably) and after a quick inspection decided that the markings were hopelessly faded and cracked, so off they came!

I had ordered a pack of Decadry labels (the single sheet A4 version) and passed a couple through the printer, using the MS Word version I prepared earlier in the year, rather than the Lazertran transfer paper, which has proved difficult to maintain.

You have to cut round the markings, whatever medium you use

After cutting out the markings and peeling off the backing paper, they went on easily and have a small amount of flexibility to cover slight imperfections....

You can just see the white background to the serial number, but the other markings are fine, and have a matt finish.  A spray over with matt varnish should complete the job.

The pack of label paper is quite expensive (£20, including postage - they did not stock the A4 sheets in PC World), so if anyone wants

a. A set of markings and

b. Me to print them off, just let me know and for the price of a pint of beer, they are yours!  I need the diameter of the roundels and all other dimensions if you want a full set.  The usual typeface limitations apply.

On the other hand, if you use the Lazertran in exactly the way you are told to in the instructions, it does produce very good markings that conform well to the surface of the model and are reasonably durable.  They seem to work best on indoor models where the wear and tear of wind and rain (not to mention salt water) seems less of an issue.

A Depron Pup, 32” span, with Lazertran markings, which has survived 3 calm dry day outdoor test flights with no apparent damage.

The same offer applies to both Decadry and Lazertran markings.
